Before Apollo was born, his mother (Leto) was harassed continuously.  Hera, wife of Zeus, sent Python after Zeus's lover, Leto, out of jealousy.  Python was sent so that Leto would not have the opportunity to settle for giving birth.  When Apollo was born, he was given a silver bow from Hephaestus, a blacksmith.  Apollo decided to take revenge on Python.  He found Python at Delphi, where he slayed him with his silver arrows.  This, however, was prohibited by those in Olympus.  Zeus was furious with his son.  All Apollo had to do was play a harmonious melody with his lyre and Zeus's rage subsided.  Instead of punishment, a shrine was built over the spot Python was killed and Zeus announced that games would be held at Delphi annually.

  2. You did a great job on summarizing the myth. It was fairly accurate to the one in the book. Although, why did he build the shrine instead of punishment? Or was the shrine punishment for his wrong-doings?

  3. Apollo built the shrine to satisfy Python's mother, Gaea. There, a priestess sat and told prophecies.
