During the eighth century B.C., Delphi became known for its Oracular powers.  Delphi was built around a sacred spring, and was full of cool springs and shady glades. The Pythian Games were held there every eight years originally, then every four years.  The springs of Delphi were to be looked upon as containing magical powers of healing and inspiration.  Priests and priestesses inhaled fumes from this area that gave them the ability to prophecy the future.
